Early Career Research Award Recipients

Bryan Cook

Dr. Bryan Cook has been named recipient of the DR 2007 Early Career Research Award. This award recognizes individuals who have made outstanding scientific contributions in special education, in basic and/or applied research, within the first 10 years following receipt of the doctoral degree. The award, co sponsored by the Donald D. Hammill Foundation, includes a $1000 honorarium to be presented at the DR reception at the 2007 CEC Annual Convention on April 20 and an invited presentation at  the CEC convention the following year.


Associate Professor at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, Dr. Cook received his Ph.D. in 1997 from the University of California at Santa-Barbara. The depth, breadth, and quality of his scholarship have resulted in an important impact on the field. Author of over 45 publications, including the co-edited book What is Special about Special Education: The Role of Evidence-Based Practices, he has made numerous presentations at national and international conferences. His work in the area of inclusion has moved the field forward in the areas of teacher attitudes toward students with disabilities and the quality of inclusive education. As Dr. Kames Kauffman, University of Virginia noted, his influence in the area of inclusion has been dramatic, no serious scholar can work in this area without knowing his contributions. He has also made substantial contributions to the translation of research into practice and the definition of evidence-based practice in the field of special education. He has also served as mentor and collaborator to numerous students and colleagues. As Dr. Timothy Landrum, University of Virginia, noted, he provides an outstanding model for beginning scholars to emulate.
